Bi-Annual Public Speaking Contest
will be held Thursday evening, November 19th, 6:30pm in B2 of the library.
Contestants come from our public speaking classes.
Students may attend the contest for their research credit requirement
if they have yet to complete the research requirement.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY *****
STUDY TITLE: Understanding How Students are Adjusting to College Life
Eligible participants must meet three criteria:
1) current enrollment in SPCM 1010, 1100, 1500, and any other SPCM
class offering course credit for research participation
2) US citizens or permanent residents, having social security number
3) aged 18 years or older
Compensation: After completing the ENTIRE study on all THREE days,
participants will receive $10,
as well as course credit in SPCM 1010,
1100, or 1500. In all other speech communication courses,
you will
receive course credit or extra credit as specified by your instructor.
Any time after Day 3 (explained below), participants may come and
see Professor Shim to sign the honoraria,
receive $10, and return the
signed consent form.
Procedure: This study involves THREE days of participation (with
the total amount of time spent being 90-100 minutes). Participants will
use a computer and complete multiple tasks on a webpage created for
this study:
• Day 1 (Nov 30, Mon): You will read two essays, write one personal
essay, and answer a series of questions. It is likely that you will
write
about a very personal issue during the study, but the study will
be entirely confidential.
• Day 2 (Dec 1, Tue): You will again read and write essays, and fill
out a survey.
• Day 3 (Dec 6 or 7, Sun or Mon): You will fill out a survey.
Time: You will complete tasks at ANY TIME of day/night you are
available, on three days listed above (Nov 30, Dec 1, and Dec 6/7).
Location: The study will take place at ANY QUIET PLACE where
participants can use a personal
COMPUTER and the INTERNET without being
interrupted by other people (e.g., dorm room or apartment). Once sign
up, participants will receive
an email on Nov 30, indicating the web
page they can log onto and complete the study. They will get reminder
emails on Days 2 and 3.
