New research opportunity: The purpose
of this project is to learn about how individuals evaluate and respond to television
public service announcements. Participants will watch clips of TV PSA's and will be asked to
share their opinions by filling out a questionnaire.
Participation should take approximately 30
minutes. Sessions will take place Monday through Friday, the week
of September 10th. Please
sign-up outside of 110 Terrell Hall on the research pool board.

3 – “Communication, Culture, and Identity”
A
research study entitled "Objectification and Language" is now available
for participation. Participation in this study
will involve viewing projected images and answering questions about
them. The purpose of the study is to
understand better how language processes work. It should take about 30
minutes. This study is open to all
students 18 years and older currently enrolled in SPCM1100, SPCM1500, or other SPCM courses that
allow for research participation. Participation qualifies for the research familiarization
requirement for basic speech courses. You can sign up for this study on the bulletin
board outside the SPCM main office in Terrell Hall. If the study sheet
is full, please do not write your name
on the sheet. You may, however, show up at the designated time and
place and participate in the study if
there are "no shows." There is no need to contact the investigator to
arrange a place on a waiting list. The
office staff in Room 110 will not have any information about any
studies.

Introductions Monday, October 1: Chapter 6 – “Communicating Verbally” AUDIENCE PERCEPTIONS OF
THE TELEVISION SHOW /Grey’s Anatomy/ is available for students wishing to fulfill
the research participation credit for SPCM courses that require it. This
project is conducted by doctoral students in the SPCM department under the
supervision of Dr. Tina M. Harris (tmharris@uga.edu
<mailto:tmharris@uga.edu>, 706.542.4753). African American females age 18 and older
AND who have seen at least five (5) episodes of /Grey’s Anatomy/ are
eligible to participate in a focus group discussing audience perceptions of
the television show. Participation will last between 60 and 90 minutes.
*Focus groups are separated by sex and race to create comfortable group
discussion environments.* The focus group will be conducted in Room 117 in
Terrell Hall on Thursday, October 11th at 2 p.m. The sign-up sheet is posted in
Terrell Hall.

The “Media Message Evaluation
Study” is a project conducted by Dr. Lijiang Shen and Dr. Jennifer A.
Samp at the Department of Speech
Communication. Its purpose is to learn about how individuals evaluate
and respond to television public service
announcements. The information generated might be published in the
forms of conference papers and/or journal articles;
however, your identity and personal information will not be published
and all information obtained will be treated
confidentially.
For this project, you will be
watching some clips of television public service announcements and fill
out a questionnaire on a laptop
computer. The questionnaire asks you to share your opinions about
the television clips. The questionnaire will also ask
you some questions about your self. In total, participation will take
less than 45 minutes. The location is Room 214, Terrell
Hall. Any student 18 years of age and older currently enrolled in 1010,
1100, 1500, or any other SPCM course that
offers extra credit or research participation may participate.
The study starts on Thursday
November 1. Sessions start at 3:30 M/W/F, and 4:45 T/R. Please leave
